In December 2005, UIAG acquired a stake of approximately 3.1% in EFKON AG, the leading provider of infrared-based electronic payment systems in the transportation industry.

The core technology of infrared for outdoor applications is protected worldwide by patents and less susceptible to errors than alternative technologies. EFKON offers infrared technology as a complete provider and markets turnkey toll systems as well as customised classification and monitoring systems.

In 2006, EFKON acquired Center Communication Systems GmbH. The leading Austrian system supplier for radio systems covers the whole spectrum of wireless communications. EFKON also acquired a majority interest in FENRITS AS, a leading specialist in the area of microwave communications. FENRITS represents a very innovative and competitive company within EFKON’s portfolio. Initial successes have been achieved through major orders in Norway.

To accelerate the implementation of technologies into marketable products and international projects, EFKON issued a corporate bond in October 2006 under the leadership of Raiffeisenlandesbank Steiermark AG. The sales of € 49m, as at the end of 2006, represented a slight improvement over the previous year.
